IMPOSSIBLE ODDS

A group of friends and I go fishing in Canada every year. It’s a fly in trip and involves 3 airplanes to get there, so a float plane is the only way in. I’m guessing that only about 200 to 300 people visit the lake a year. The lake is in NW Ontario and there are approximately 70,000 lakes in the region and countless fishing/hunting camps and lodges.
The lake we go to is Rowan Lake and we stay at Alexander’s on Rowan. The lodge in Canada is 1270 miles from my house in Arlington Texas. The lodge and camp are on a very small island in the middle of the lake. In the lodge is a large Moose hanging on the wall, shot in 1978 and the hunter was Edwin (Eddie) Showalter. I’ve seen it a zillion times and it has a small note on it saying that Edwin shot it.
Yesterday I got an email with this picture of a Moose shot in 1978. James Foster from work sent me the email. He was talking to a lady, Jen, who is his Jeep club. Several years ago Jen told James she was from Canada and he told her we go fishing up there.
A few days ago Jen’s Aunt posted the picture on Facebook of her son, Edwin Showalter, who shot a Moose in 1978 in Canada and knew it was hanging on a wall in a lodge at Rowan Lake. James kind of remembered that is the place we go and forwarded the picture to me. Jen is Edwin’s cousin.
It’s the same Moose, shot 42 years ago and still at Alexander’s on Rowan. The odds of this picture being put on FB, Jen seeing it, remembering a friend that has a friend that goes to Canada fishing and wondering if it could be the same Moose can’t even be calculated. With the billions of people living on earth this coincidence came down to 5 people. Edwin, his mother, Jen, James and me. Add in the 42 years, 1250 miles apart, a small number of people that have ever been to the lodge, 70,000 lakes in the area, countless Moose being shot, Edwin’s mother posting a picture that’s 42 years old and eventually getting in my hands seems pretty much impossible.
