Early August Fishing Report

Posted by:

Bass fishing is at its peak this time of year with groups going out and catching 100-150 bass per day.  Many of the bass are running 17-19 inches.  The biggest smallmouth bass was caught two weeks ago on a swim bait with a 3/16 oz jig head and a 3.5 inch swim bait. Measuring just over 21 inches.

Walleye are getting hard to find in the mid summer heat.   Our clients who have been targeting walleyes are having good luck fishing deep weeds with a jig and a leech or night crawler.  The biggest so far this year was a 32.5 incher caught in Basil Lake one of our short walk to portage lakes.

Pike fishing has been exceptional.  Everyone has been catching a lot of pike while fishing for muskies.  Go to any weed bed you can find and cast around a number 4 Mepps and hold on. If you find deeps weeds (sand grass) in 12-16 feet casting around big spoons has worked well for catching some really nice pike.

Muskie fishing has been a little slow with not a lot of fish been seen.  The fish that have been found have been biters and have been big fish.  Bull dawgs or dark buck tails have been the magic bait so far.    The surface bait bite has started to heat up.  All the weed beds are finally getting to there full maturity and the muskies are relating to those classic weed spots.
