..especially on Rowan Lake.

Congrats to Dan  on this 49″ inch beautiful Rowan lake Muskie that he boated on the last day of his trip to Rowan lake.  Dan was spending his fishing trip with his Dad Joe.

Bob Blake dialed in on a nice pike and Jason captured an awesome Rowan Lake sunset off our deck recently.

Mid July Fishing Report

Posted by:

Water levels continue to drop, but we are still high for this time of the summer.  Lake surface temps continue to rise and are getting in the upper 60’s and low 70’s on sunny days.  Still cool for this time in July especially compared to the last two years where we were pushing 80 degree temps.  The weedy bays have good weed growth and the deeper water cabbage tips are starting to show up.  The high water has definitely impeded ...

Life on a Island…

Posted by:

Spending five months out of the year on a wilderness island is about as good as it gets!

Running a remote lodge has lot’s of challenges and so many great rewards and it seems we always have a list of projects to do around camp.  This year is no different as we really needed to replace the shop floor down at the docks and the log boat ramps needed replacing.  We try to squeeze these projects in when everyone is out ...

Early July Fishing Report

Posted by:

Lake trout, walleye and bass fishing remain strong. Water levels are dropping and the surface temps are rising.  Despite the cool spring and summer fishing has been good.  The Weeds are starting to grow in all the regular spots and fish continue to show up in the weeds and on the rocks.  We had some pretty nice muskies caught and released over the past few weeks as you can tell from the release sheets and pics posted below.

Congratulations to all our muskie fisherman ...

Rowan Lake Muskie Opener

Posted by:

The opener was quite different this past opening weekend.  The water level is very high and the surface temps were quite cool in the low 60’s.   We caught big fish on reefs when it was cloudy and now the sun is finally out and the temps are risking nicely which should even make the fishing better.

Yesterday a guest of ours who never been fishing for muskies caught a 50″ on a rattle trap.  It was a giant not spawned yet.  Silvia ...

Early Season Fishing Report from Rowan Lake

Posted by:

Water temps here in the Canadian shield country are rising and we are at 57 degree now up from 52 degrees the other day. We’ve been seeing some real giant muskies in the shallows.  It’s so much fun to see them again.  They are not pairing up yet, but they are just feeling the warmth and sunning themselves.  The spawn should peak here shortly.  The smallmouth are on the reefs and we are catching small northerns and lake trout with out moving the boat.  We’ve ...

Nielsen’s Fly-In Lodge is Open for Business!

Posted by:

I was able to fly into camp last Tuesday with partial ice cover on the lake.  Lynn and the rest of our staff came in on Thursday.  With the assistance of our great friend Dean Nelson and his son Jack we were able to get camp set-up in a couple of days busting it from sunrise to sundown.  Our first guests have already arrived and the Lake Trout bite is on!

Ok..I know this fish was caught out of season ...

Really close to “Ice Out”!

Posted by:

Our good friend Rusty flew over camp yesterday and you can see the ice is still present.  May be a few more days.  A little wind and rain combo should take care of it.  Be nice if the sun would show up this spring as well!

Packed and ready to go to camp!

Posted by:

Two years in a row, late ice out is keeping us in a holding pattern to get into camp and get the lodge open! The long term average ice out for Rowan lake us usually the last week in April – first week in May. The good news is it won’t be long! Ice conditions have rapidly deteriorated the past couple of days and we hope to get into camp this coming week to be ready for our first guests ...
